Where has the time gone? This is the 4th year of our Truth and Reconciliation Program.
Truth and Reconciliation Commissions have happened all over the world. They are a way to help create peace when countries have violated the human rights of many people all at once. The TRC of Canada started its work on 2008 and finished in 2015.
Reconciliation is about establishing and maintaining a mutually respectful relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in our country. In order for that to happen, there has to be awareness of the past, acknowledgement of the harm that has been inflicted, atonement for the cause and ACTION to change behaviour.
First Nations, Métis and Inuit across the lands now known as Canada have teachings and knowledge on how to create and maintain respectful relationships between people.
These approaches are important. The unique offerings of First Nations, Métis and Inuit help improve ideas of human rights, relationships and reconciliation. The perspectives and understanding of Indigenous Elders and knowledge Keepers about the ethics, concepts and practices of reconciliation are Vital to long-term reconciliation.
When Navigating the journey of the truth and reconciliation, there can be difficult conversations and moments.
The key is to know when to listen and when to speak honestly and respectfully. And when sometimes the road to reconciliation seems impossible to travel – that’s when courage is most needed.
