The Order of Rupert’s Land

The order of Rupert’s Land was established in 1984 by the Bishop of Rupert’s Land. It is given in recognition of outstanding support and leadership in the church.

The Order of Rupert’s Land is presented by the Bishop of Rupert’s Land to deserving recipients at the gathering of the Synod of the Diocese of Rupert’s Land.

At the October 14th service at St. John’s Cathedral, our own George Campbell was honoured with a presentation of the Order of Rupert’s Land. George is Cree from the community of Norway House and, as a man of faith, has served many. He acted as an interpreter for patients in the north and as Regional Director of Medical Services of Canada, he oversaw the development of all medical services at the National level. He was asked to take on the role of reforming the Indigenous Ministries of the Diocese of Rupert’s Land.

He was chosen to be the Chair of the Rupert’s Land Aboriginal Circle (RLAC), a body that gave advise to the Bishop on Indigenous matters. The RLAC noticed that many Indigenous people from northern communities were needing pastoral care in Winnipeg Hospitals. A Diocesan Indigenous Mission Developer was created and supported as a non-profit organization. George was also part of a group who successfully supported the vision for a National Indigenous Bishop.

As part of a National Gathering in Misissauga, Ontario, George was instrumental in creating the Misissauga Decalaration promoting self- determination. George continued to chair the Rupert’s Land Elders’ Circle.

I know George from our church, as a big friendly bear of a man whose laugh is as huge as his heart. He did what he saw needed to be done in so many ways and he he had a gentle, yet persuasive, way of involving others in the work. He has done so much for St. Andrew’s and brought to us his common sense approach of “Let’s just get it done!”

Congratulations George on your well deserved award! We are all enriched from knowing you. I am certain to include George’s wife Sheila in this honour as she is a gracious, hard working partner of this extraordinary man.
